Auditions are open to any singer aged 18 or older from anywhere and with any level of choral experience.
Friendly and relaxed, they’re designed to identify each singer’s vocal range, ability to stay on pitch, and ease learning harmonies. Auditions consist of a song and a harmony exercise. For details , please see below.
New members cycle in every September and February. We conduct tryouts for these cycles in the weeks before each season begins. For specific dates, please check this page periodically or email our artistic director at info@northriversing.org to be added to our auditions mailing list.
Auditioners will be required to sing two (2) songs at the audition. All songs can be downloaded here.
(1) Auditioners may try out with any song they’d like to bring, in any style. For convenience, we offer five suggestions here to download and sing at the audition:
“Cabaret” from Cabaret
“Over the Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz
“Try to Remember” from The Fantasticks
“Singin’ in the Rain”
“My Funny Valentine”
(2) Because we sing multi-part harmony, the audition also includes a short exercise involving the harmony of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” (a song that is outside of our repertoire but lends itself well to auditions). The auditioner needs to prepare either the alto harmony line or the baritone harmony line FROM MEASURE 8 through MEASURE 23. For the audition they do not have to learn anything beyond that.
Your job will be to sing the harmony while our artistic director plays the melody on the piano. If this kind of thing is new to you, memorizing the harmony ahead of time will help a lot!
We are always on the lookout for volunteers—be it to help post flyers announcing our auditions and concerts, take tickets at our events, provide services such as printing, photography, web management, and graphic design, etc.
