History and Mission

North River Sing is a community chorus based in Jersey City devoted to the Great AmericanSongbook. We were founded in 2014 as a place where friends and neighbors in and around Jersey City who love to sing – and who love show tunes and jazz standards in particular – can create this incredible music as a community. We also delight in staging charitable performances free of charge.

North River Sing prides itself on having exceptionally gifted musical directors with the highest academic training in choral conducting as well as depth of experience. Rehearsals are fun (for sure), but they are also rigorous. The combination of singing the best of American musical theater and jazz; of making friends; of stretching oneself educationally and artistically; and of bringing joy to others that North River Sing offers results in a rich experience for members and audiences alike.

Why “North River”?

North River is an old nautical name for the part of the Hudson River located between New York City and New Jersey. We named ourselves North River Sing because we wanted to cast our net far and wide and welcome residents from all over the area to join us.

We rehearse Sunday evenings from 5:45 to 8:00 at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Downtown Jersey City. Our schedule has two sessions – the fall (September through January) and the spring (February through early June) – each culminating in a concert that is open to the public and free of charge. At the end of each session we also give several other concerts. We’ve sung at the Oculus at the World Trade Center, the Hoboken Museum, Peace Care St. Ann’s nursing home (in Jersey City), the PERC homeless shelter (in Union City), and the Bayonne Jewish Community Center, to name just a few venues.

If you’re at least 18 years old and can hold a tune, we’d love to have you! Simply try out during one of our biannual auditions (see the “auditions tab”). New members cycle in every September and February. Membership costs $195 per person per session. (We’re a nonprofit but need to cover our operating expenses.) Some limited financial aid is available for those unable to meet these costs. Members are also required to pay a $30 refundable deposit for sheet music.

Who We Are

Our members are as diverse as the towns from which we currently hail: Jersey City, Bayonne, Maplewood, Rutherford, and West Orange. Included in the group are musicians, museum administrators, lawyers, nurses, bankers, and IT professionals (to name a few). We may cut a wide swath and sing different parts (five to be exact), but we have one thing in common: We love to sing!
