History and Mission
North River Sing is a community chorus based in Jersey City devoted to the Great American Songbook. We were founded in 2014 as a place where friends and neighbors in Jersey City, Bayonne, Hoboken, and beyond who love to sing – and who love Broadway show tunes and jazz standards in particular – can create this incredible music as a community and entertain and lift the spirits of audiences throughout the area by staging charitable and public performances free of charge.
Why “North River”?
North River is an old nautical name for the part of the Hudson River located between New York City and New Jersey. We named ourselves North River Sing because we wanted to cast our net far and wide and welcome residents from all over the area to join us.
We rehearse Sunday evenings from 5:30 to 7:30 at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Downtown Jersey City. Our schedule has two sessions – the fall (September through January) and the spring (February through early June) – each culminating in a concert that is open to the public and free of charge. Whether we’re singing as a full chorus or just breaking off to Christmas carol, our events are relaxed and inviting.
If you’re at least 18 years old and can hold a tune, we’d love to have you! Simply come to one of our biannual auditions and/or send us an audio file of yourself singing a familiar song. New members cycle in every September and February. Membership costs $195 per person per session. (We’re a nonprofit but need to cover our operating expenses.)
Who We Are
Our members are as diverse as the towns from which we currently hail: Jersey City, Bayonne, Rutherford, and West Orange. Included in the group are musicians, museum administrators, lawyers, nurses, bankers, and IT professionals (to name a few). We may cut a wide swath and sing different parts (five to be exact), but we have one thing in common: We love to sing!
